Annual RPZ Inspection - DEP

Annual RPZ Inspection - DEP
What is the annual RPZ inspection?

The annual RPZ inspection is an inspection of the backflow prevention devices that are required by the NYC Department of Environmental Protection. They are required to be inspected  every year, the same month they were installed.

What is a Backflow Prevention Device?

Backflow devices help keep water safe and clean and prevent contaminated water from being pulled back into the nearby distribution system when there is an unexpected change in water pressure such as when fire hydrants are opened. When this occurs, the device is triggered and stops it. These devices are needed for businesses that use chemicals within that premise because it could potentially cause a backflow condition where the water goes back to the city’s water supply and contaminates the water within that neighborhood.

Does this apply to me?

If your building of business can introduce any contaminant that would reduce the quality of water back into the drinking system, you need to comply. Some examples of these businesses are:

  • Auto Repair Shops
  • Car Washes
  • Dry Cleaners & Laundromats
  • Film & Photo Processors
  • Funeral Homes
  • Hair and Nail Salons
  • Laboratories
  • Manufacturers
  • Medical Offices
  • Restaurants

The goal of maintaining safe drinking water is easily attainable by hiring engineers, architect, or licensed master plumbers (LPMs) who evaluate the need for a black flow device.  Failure to follow the New York State law regarding these devices could lead to fins or disconnection of your water service.
